Start button not working in GG to SMS games
Post Posted: Tue Oct 15, 2024 12:28 pm
I've noticed that in quite a few games that were patched from GG to SMS the start button is not working. Thus making the game impossible to start. One game that comes to mind is Coca Cola Kid. But there are several others as well. Any way to fix this? I'm running the games on a MiSTer.

Off the top of my head, I’d guess they either mapped Start to the SMS Pause button or a 2P controller input.

But if you’re on MiSTer, why not play the GG core?

Most quick and dirty GG2SMS patches merely change the port read for the start button, making it Up on controller 2. This is also stated in the description.

GG core = small screen size.

The core may well have an option to unmask the borders. I see mister_sms lists “ Extended Game Gear Resolution Option” for example.

Note however that most games look pretty bad like this, the GG2SMS conversions sometimes look equally bad and sometimes have some remediation. Very rarely do they look like native SMS games (with sprites and backgrounds correctly drawn to the edge of the screen).
