Alberto Gonzales - Infogrames
Posted: Fri Apr 13, 2007 4:46 am

Hey All,
I thought I would post this in the music forum as Alberto Gonzales is a music designer. I love his music and I know he did the music for Asterix and The Smurfs, but I was wondering if anyone knows any other games he did (sms and gg) as I would like to check out more of his music. Many Thanks Scott |

The only other Infogrames game that I can think of is Tintin in Tibet. They also have some co-credits on some GG games - Skweek and Slider.

<lamejoke>Nice to see a man go from game music composer to US Attorney General.</lamejoke>
BTW, Skweek and Slider are the same thing. |

Here are a bunch of Game Boy soundtracks that list him as the author (zip of them all attached):
Asterix Baby Felix - Halloween Carrot Crazy Die Maus Hugo 2 Lucky Luke Marvin Strikes Back! Obelix Otto's Ottifanten Radikal Bikers (Prototype) Ronaldo V.Football Sea Battle Spirou The Smurfs The Smurfs Nightmare Tintin - Le Temple du Soleil Turok - Rage Wars Turok 2 - Seeds of Evil Turok 3 - Shadow of Oblivion Turok - Battle of the Bionosaurs UEFA 2000 V-Rally - Championship Edition Sylvester and Tweety I especially like the Turok ones. I recommend using foo_gep or Audio Overload as a good GBS player for Windows. |

If it's the same guy I'm thinking of, he used to work at New Frontier/Bit Managers and made other rather nice soundtracks for the ZX Spectrum.
EDIT: Light Corridor, for example. And by the way, it's "Gonzalez". |

Whoa cool!
Thanks Blargg and IceKnight, I have only just noticed that spelling mistake this morning. |

Hmmm, if it's Gonzalez, maybe Gonzales is another guy? Anyway, here are the ZX Spectrum tunes I had with either name mentioned (attached as zip):
Hostages Mystical North South Space Madness The Light Corridor The latest foo_gep should also play these. |

Hello there,
I'm glad I've found this site and this thread, it's probably the first time that I have seen anyone interested in my GB or SMS music, thank you very much! :) I must say that I'm just only one of the many Alberto Gonzalez that exist in the world, that's why I used the McAlby (or Joe McAlby) pseudonym in my Spectrum / Amstrad / MSX soundtracks, I'ts a rather common name. From the listed GB sountracks there are some missing: Pop Up / Cool Ball (first GB music) Bomb Jack Metal Masters (unreleased) Tintin in Tibet Die Maus By the way, Blargg, how did you know about the Radikal Bikers soundtrack??? Cheers to all, Alberto |

is this the same Radikal Bikers as this? I really loved the arcade version's soundtrack ("I'm a pizza man"). Whoever composed it, is a genius. |

Thanks for the link, Maxim. :)
Tom, the composer you are referring to is Joan Sanmartí. Cheers |

Whoa this is an extremely geeky moment in my life as a musician seeing Alberto himself reply to this topic. Thanks for the updated list Alberto I will be sure to somehow get a hold of the game soundtracks as your music is a real inspiration to me.
And I have your Die Maus music Alberto, and cheers to you Alberto for the reply this has made my day. And one last question Alberto did you ever release sheet music or anything of the things that you have written? Shivers I had better go my oven fries are burning. Thanks All, Scott |

Thank you for your kind words Scott!
Unfortunately I have always used sequencers (my own) to compose, or I have written the music directly in source code, so there is no sheet music of my works, sorry :( If you liked any of my tunes you will probably like Obelix for SNES too, it was the only soundtrack that I programmed for that console, and one of my favorites. Cheers! Alberto |

Aww Alberto bad luck about no sheet music, oh well these things can't be helped.
Thanks for the Obelix suggestion I will have a listen to it when my PC finishes updating. Also Alberto, we run music and coding competitions here at the community, I think we are running them next year so why not do some cool music entry? I will be remixing something from the smurfs, should be fun. For more info check out http://www.smspower.org/music/competition |

Somehow I never noticed that Alberto Gonzalez was posting here. It's nice to see you posting here! Anyway, I like your stuff as well. A friend of mine covered a Turok 3 song for NES (you can find it here). Also someone covered a song from Smurfs (the Swamp) on NES for the latest Famicompo, but they changed all the minor chords to major ones so I wouldn't recommend listening to it :)

Scott, a remix for the competition could be interesting, but from the own author? has it happened before? :D
The "Pitufos Volcan stage" (smurfs) remix sounds interesting. I imagined a big orchestra when I composed that tune, but it sounds better on Game Boy. As far as I remember the Master System sound chip couldn't produce low frequency sounds for the bass part, but I had not much time to experiment with it. RushJet1, tell your friend that he has done a wonderful job with that Turok 3 tune for NES, I couldn't have done better myself :) Sometimes you work very hard on some tunes but nobody notices them, and there are others that you may think that are not very good, but some people likes them! It's fascinating. Thanks for the kind words! Regards, Alberto |

Alberto, the SMS chip has a feature where you set tone 2 to silent, and the noise channel to produce a 1/16th duty cycle note 4 octaves below the tone 2 frequency. The problem is that you then have no white noise available... a lot of Matt Furniss' tunes use this feature, eg. Lemmings, Marble Madness.
|
Posted: Wed Aug 22, 2007 6:47 pm |
Yeah, one thing I noticed about Alberto's songs is that a lot of them are in the key of A, the lowest key the SMS can play. I also noticed there was a lot of bass-then-arp patterns, all of which mean that a lot of good choices were made with the SMS in mind. The SMS soundtrack is better than the NES one in some areas!
When you wrote the NES tracks (for smurfs), by the way, did you not use DPCM because of developer restrictions or because you just didn't want to? |
|
|
Posted: Thu Aug 23, 2007 3:00 am |
If I remember correctly, Alberto did the GB Smurfs music first, then the NES. So no DPCM. :-D
Hi, Alberto! |

|

I assume it has, I am still deciding on what song o remix, I may do a medley yet. For a few things its gong to have me playing sax, and playing piano, some will be computer derived but I am going to see how things pan out. |

Hi again,
Maxim, I didn't know about that feature. In fact, I had not much time to spend on the Sega soundracks or the PSG study / driver programming. I love bassy sounds so working with the SMS was not very rewarding... Had I known about that feature my compositions would have been very different! I liked the tone of the noise channel, though. However I loved working with the NES, specially on Asterix when I programmed the sound driver. I had a lot of fun with the drum sounds! As you may know the sountracks of Asterix for GB and NES are quite different, I always wanted to suit the music to the capabilities of the PSG. Unfortunately the time (and budget) for any project is finite and you can't do all you want. About the NES DPCM sounds... it was a problem of memory restrictions. I had a limit of 16k to fit the sound driver, music and FX in all my soundracks for 8 bit consoles. I still can't believe that I could fit in 21 tunes + 32 FX in the GB Smurfs! RushJet1, you may like this one... http://files.keyfax.com/forums/user-files/231597-Another%20World.mp3 I did it with a Korg X5DR sound module jut after the GB song. Are there rips of my Game Gear / Master System soundtracks? Regards, Alberto |

YES this is probably my favorite song from smurfs: the nightmare!
edit: bah, now i want to cover this song for NES! |

http://www.smspower.org/music/vgm/index.shtml have a look here, I think there is another folder somewhere on the server with more VGMs but ask Maxim to confirm this. I started ripping The Smurfs for the master system myself but I ran out of time. I may still keep doing it but uni work is far more important at the moment. |

I can not find the sountracks of Spirou or Tintin, I suppose that they are not available? :/
Cheers, Albert |

|

Spirou was never released for the GG or MS, was it?
|
Posted: Sat Aug 25, 2007 1:26 am |
I believe Tintin was released, Alberto and others if you like I can start working on a pack for this game, I vaguely remember playing it when I was younger, although the books stick in my mind better. Are there any other games that you can think of Alberto that you did music for on the SMS? |
|
|
Posted: Sat Aug 25, 2007 12:48 pm |
So, Spirou for Game Gear was not released for after all... The game was finished entirely, that's for sure. Scott, I can provide a binary file with the soundtrack if you are interested ;)
Maybe it's time for it to see the light. I did 3 only soundtracks for Game Gear, Tintin, Spirou and Smurfs. Cheers, Alberto |

Please Alberto that would be greatly appreciated, I hope this post isn't going too off topic, sorry if it is Maxim :P |

This thread is incredible. I first became familiar with some of Gonzalez's work after getting into the Asterix soundtrack for the NES.
My now-defunct video game cover band did a fleshed out arrangement of the Game Over music. The original is a rather short tune, but it's one that stuck out to me as never getting boring no matter how long it loops. Unfortunately we never got to do studio recordings, but there is a live recording from our last show. - parasprinter: asterix - game over theme (forgive any sloppiness, we never had time to practice! :p) You can hear a couple friends singing along even! It was arranged for a couple synthesizers, guitar, bass, and drums on top of a chiptune cover I did, using mostly NES samples (and some amiga samples). If you're still checking this thread I'd like to thank you for the inspiration and awesome music! I've been meaning to check out more of your stuff, so this thread will come in handy. |

wow bucky that song was so cool, you got anymore stuff?
|
Posted: Mon May 05, 2008 3:19 pm |
Sure do! But none other of gonzalez's stuff unfortunately. I'll make another thread for that stuff.
I tagged an NSFE for Asterix, which can be downloaded here - http://slickproductions.org/nsfe.php I really wanted to cover the Egypt theme as well but never got around to it. Maybe in the future with another group... |

Thank you bucky for the cover and for your kind comments. I'm glad you liked that little tune so much! :)
By the way, I'm very interested in listening to covers of my tunes, so please let me know if you know of any other. Thanks! Cheers, Alberto |

I can not tell you how wonderful this cover is, it often sits at the top of my playlists. Obviously credit where its due to Alberto for making the tune originally but the live feel you bring to it truely makes this song epic. I'd love to see more songs in this vein, there are plenty of song covers out there from video games but few have the lively atmosphere that this one does. The closest I can think of is some of Press Play On Tape's live covers. I've only recently been checking out some of Alberto's tunes and can't believe I hadn't seen them earlier, lots of nice melodies. One thing I did notice is that some songs from Asterix & Smurfs seem to share simular motifs in them, the Bonus Round from Asterix / Intro & Victory from Smurfs is one example. |

Am I too late to talk to Gonzales?? When I first started the ripping for the Smurfs game, I had to finish the game to listen to the musics, but at first the game was a little hard because of the bad playability, but the musics are great, and kept me going and learning to play that thing (with some "savestating", especially on final boss Gargamel, too hard) and in the end, I could finally see the name of the composer, which I never knew I would write to someday *__* (tell me about geeky moment) XD
So what can I say ... thanks for these great musics, I feel good simply humming them sometimes, they are funny, and have such great melodies! \o/ and.. I'll look for this Asterix game on SMS (which one??) and Obelix on SNES =P Some day I'll midi them too, I hope I can do at least good ... XD |
|
|
Posted: Mon Nov 03, 2008 11:29 pm |
I think he will return one day ;)
Also, if you make MIDIs of the Smurfs that would be awesome! |
|
|
Posted: Tue Nov 04, 2008 3:21 am |
Did you guys listened to my The Flash, Lemmings or Alien 3 midis? Smurfs' musics use that principle of short notes that can only be listened in slow "motion".. sometimes midi make these notes have strange volumes (like in the midi of Flash - Episode 3, particularly ...) but most Lemmings midis seem well, so I'll have to give it a shot someday =P
|
Posted: Tue Nov 04, 2008 1:41 pm |
I listened to these MIDIs and they were all quite good, what software do you actually use to make the MIDI files? |

Thank you very much for the kind comments, Johnnyz. Please let me know if you find (or make) any MIDI file of my music, I love listening to those. We didn't make any of the Asterix games for the Sega Master System or Game Gear. I would have loved to! By the way, it's "Gonzalez" :D Cheers! |

Actually Alberto if your still here, looking at the asterix soundtracks on the SMS, Nathan McCree did one of them. They were quite nice to listen to, just wondering did you ever have contact with him in the industry back in the day?
|
Posted: Sat Nov 15, 2008 5:35 pm |
No I didn't know about Nathan McCree. In fact I have never met any other "veteran" game musician, only Tim Follin once and by e-mail. That was a great pleasure, I must say :) The Follins have been my idols since I started composing music. They still are, of course.
