I've sent this message out to several sms websites and a few have said to try here so here goes.

I was wondering if you would know what this is?

It appears to be a Japanese mastersystem 10 game arcade cabinet. I cannot read or type in Japanese so I cannot find any sites referencing it. Please see the included pictures.

The back of the crt where the wires attach is broken so there is no way it would work without a new crt, also the wiring seems to have been adapted to 110 but I have no idea if it is a sound conversion so I will not be trying it out without an expert looking over it, also there are no cartridges in the ten slots so I doubt it would show much other than a circuit check. I acquired the unit for an undisclosed amount at a garage sale with intents of making a mame machine, but I do not want to gut a one of a kind machine. All I can for sure say is it is way older than the genesis 8 game Mega Tech.

I will probably throw it on ebay so a collector would be able to buy it and restore it.

Thanks,
Chris

Update,

Everyone that has gotten back to me so far has no definite info on what it is, or where it came from but wants to offer me cash for it, I will sell it but I want it to get fixed up and used.

I am definitely going to sell it on ebay so it goes to a collector but I want to know what it is so I list it correctly.

It's look like exactly what you think. It's a 10 game arcade cabinet for Mark III (Japanese master system). I supose, europeen games can function correctly (need someone confirm). You found it in US?

What i'm sure, that is the first time i see it. Usually we have that :

They were for shop desmonstration.

Your game arcade is a very nice piece for me, look like very rary. Only problem will be the port price on Ebay...

The question is : Does it work correcty?

Knowing that the playchoice and others mega-tech are pretty tough to be found, what about a mark 3 arcade system ?
Pretty sure I've already seen the jamma pcb board, but the cabinet itself, WoW
Think you've got a f**** piece of collection dude, should get you some good cash :)

It is a Sega Mark III Soft Desk 10 unit.

Chris e-mailed you the info I got, there's not much more known yet.

Here's a copy of the info: (obtained from Mixi posts after posting those pictures)
"
Many people from Japan remember and played thoses unit, apparently it was common at the time, used in game shops and hotels.
For 100 yens you can play a choice of 10 SMS/SG-1000 games for a
certain amount of time (probably dipswitch configurable like the Display Unit systems). Games could be switched during the time limit.

There was a SG-1000/SC-3000 edition of this which a black front panel
instead of the blue MarkIII one, which the SC-3000 keyboard in exterior,
and it served to try educational applications.

The default time limit for 100 yens seems to have been 10 minutes, and putting 100 yens again extend the timer.

The Sega Soft Desk 5 version was the SG-1000 one.
Jun remembers those games on it: Rock'n Bolt, Champion Kendou, Ninja Princess, Wonder Boy, H.E.R.O.

Thanks for the replies, Bock, I did get your messages but the did not have the name of the unit in them and thats what I need to list the unit on ebay,

As i posted the unit has a cracked crt in the back and seems to have been converted to 110v so I am not going to power it up but it seems complete except for any games, it even has the coin slots attached.

I'll be wiping the dirt off and posting it on ebay soon, the problem is I have no idea how to ship a unit this big overseas as I am new to ebay selling. Anyone have any Ideas on what services would attempt such a shipment.

What's the size and weight of the whole unit?

Would it be possible to unplug the electronic components (board, cables) and ship them separately? It'll be preferable to send the electronic part safely packaged by Airmaiil, and the rest has to go by surface mail to get some decent price.

the unit is about half the height of most arcade games and weighs a good at least 70 pounds I would guess, I'll get exact measurements but it would not be a joy to ship.

As for removing the components, I have no Idea, I do not have any arcade game experience, I usually fix computers or car stereos and due to the rare nature I would be extremely hesitant of breaking a component of which there is no way of finding a replacement. There used to be a gentleman with an amusement sales and service company in town and I suppose I could inquire about what he charges for disassembly service at the buyers expense.

The perferred method would be a local pickup but seeing as the SMS is underappreciated in the USA I doubt there will be a us buyer. I do know of a local airport that has a shipping center and I would be willing to drop off the unit within 30 miles of my address for shipment at no charge. I do not even know what companies would ship an arcade game internationally?

I don't know either but I figure out there'll be a solution. Probably try asking to people who are used to import arcade stuff.
I'm pretty sure that shipping could cost more than the unit price (well in my case I'm located in France, it's gonna hurt my wallet).

The dimensions are 45 1/2" h X 20 1/2" w X 29" d

And I got some more info and pictures

Apparently this unit was made in 1984, at least that is what the copyright on the pcb says also I found a mystery board with a custom keyboard inside the cabinet.

I also took about 6 more pics I can post if that's ok.

WOW. I so want this. But as it is in USA (ie other side of the planet), I must let it go and swear at my locality every day for the rest of the year. LMAO

It indead looks like a Mark3 version of the MegaTech. I have a MegaTech here and they too work on a timed basis.

Seeing as I cant get my hands on it (bugger), I have 2 questions...

1) The BIOS ROM (The labeled chip in the top right of the PCB in pic #3)...what is the ROM number? (should start with EPR-...). Is there any chance of getting it dumped?
Edit: It looks like there may be a second ROM on the left as well. The one with the sticker

2) I would love to write up a page on this gem on my website. Could I use your pics (and possibly get better ones)? Could I get measurements, also, of the cab and control panel? Pic of any cab art?

WOW again !!!

Mike, I'll be glad to get you the chip numbers and post them asap, I cannot dump them because I have no hardware to do so, you'll have to request this of the buyer.

Also any and all pictures and descriptions are 100% free for you to use on other pages, just throw me some credit if you can, and let me know what other pics you want and at what MegaPix and I'll e-mail them to you.

I know how you feel, one time when I was a kid I sawe a playchoice 10 at an arcade and I've always wanted one, but car payments and running my own business come first.

The EPROM chips are uncovered. Please, gently stick a bit of paper to cover the EPROM windows.

If the board is easily removable or if the EPROM chips are socketed and removable, you could work out to have them dumped (IF the data is still valid) by lending the part/chips to someone (I could do that, many other people in US could also do that).

Mind you, I'll try to buy this unit from you whenever you decide to part it. The shipping is a killer, thought.

Ok, I'm going to get those numbers and i'llpost them soon but I have 2 questions

1. Exactly what chips am I to cover?

2. Anyone have any ideas what that weird custom labeled keyboard is?

Thanks,
Chris

The EPROM chips, as highlighted in the picture below.
EPROM data gets erased by UV light. Keeping it uncovered is not safe. You'll want to gently stick a piece of paper using tape over both of them, over the "window".

Can you do closer or higher resolution pictures, to read the labels?

S its EPR-5803b? Hmmm....that seems to fit in the 1983 range, just after the SC3000 ROMs and well before the Master System ROM range. Interesting. o it is spot on for the Mark III era.
It is also around the time that Sega were putting SG1000 hardware into some aracde games (eg. Champion Pro Wrestling)

Bock, I can make out that the rightmost 16 buttons are a 4x4 grid 01234, 56789, ABCDEF.
I guess the RS key is reset.

Maybe this is a butchered SC3000/SG1000-II keyboard with phone/calculator style keypads. The purpose one can only guess...maybe for debugging/developing/keyboard based games. Dunno. getting those ROMs dumped will shed light on the purpose (I hope)

PS: Thanks for allowing me to do the page. Credit is always given when due :)

Looks like a debugging interface.
I suppose there's a backend (software, hardware?) providing system/debugging information upon pressing the keys.
Probably cryptic and unusable.
Cool.!

Handwritten label after enhancement.
Appears to read...

Quote
SD10
<QGOD>
1/29-81

Make of that what you will. Maybe a debugger program ?

OK, so the SD10 stands for Soft Desk 10, the name of the unit.
QGOD?

OK. The page is up at my site, www.gameinfoonline.com under Sega/Arcade/SoftDesk10.

I will update this as more info comes to hand.

CurbJumpinss, please let me know if you want to be refered to as that or by another name.

Also, I noticed something interesting on the pic sega9.jpg. On the top right of the pic, on the board, there is a set of components. One is marked "TIME". Are these some sort of switches for the settings? Any chance of getting a pic of these?

The cpyright indicates the first release as 1984.

On your board you can see 861118 meaning particular board was made 18 Nov 1986.

Mike, great page, a few notes

The eprom chips w/ labels are on the main board, the ones on the mystery board have no labels.

One person wrote to me and said the japanese by the game selector buttons says "Game / Start".

The counters to the left of the speaker seem to be coin counters, the unit in place receives us quarters, the original japanese unit may have taken 5 defferent coins and counter each one?

There are four blue over silver dip switches on the left of the main pcb.

Please e-mail or post what pictues/ info you want and what resolution you want, up to 5mp

another thing I noticed, in picture sega3.jpg there is a vertical orange board this has standard sms video out ports, composit, and the weird midi looking video out. Possibly it is a sms that the other board just changes which game data gets fed to it, I'll get some picks of that board.

Oops, sorry I forgot to translate the text for you.

The text next to the red light is too small for me to read on the picture, but I can read "15 seconds" so I suppose it is a note to explain that the red light flashes when there's only 15 seconds left on the timer.

Can't see on the picture but it should be a DIN outport port, this is commonly used to output RGB video (Japanese and most European Master System have that).

Babelfish translates this as "Coin input port"...do you agree, Bock? Your the expert on japanese here.

I wonder how much freight would be?

I was thinking about value as I believe that was the thrust of the "What do I have" question.
To a collector with service skills, the skies the limit.
The eBay value...in its present state, it would be valuble as an oddity only. Most people would look and say "I want" but not bid as they wouldnt be able to get past the busted monitor.
A reasonable upright lowboy cab with game would be about AU$250. I imagine thats what this would fetch on ebay as is, due to...
* Busted monitor
* Dirty
* Rarity
* Strangly low ebay prices for arcade cabs in USA
* No games

BUT....

Spend AU$50-AU$100 replacing / fixing the monitor. Clean it up a bit and buy a few games for it....and you could be looking in the AU$1000 ballpark, IMO.

Mike,

Intereseting theory, the problem is is that if I fixed the unit up and bought some games then I would never be able to part with it.

You know how that goes.

Generally, Excite translation is better for Japanese

コイン投入口
Coin slot

http://excite.co.jp/world/

If you use Firefox, I suggest to add the extension 'Panneau de Traduction", it's very handful.

Another tip with Korean this time : don't try to translate directly Korean to English, the translation is very strange, the trick here is to use Excite first to translate Korean to Japanese, then in a second step Japanese to English. I guess the final result is better because Korean can be viewed as simplified Japanese (and Japanese can be viewed as simplified Chinese).

Well, both are equivalent..
I would have used "Coin input port" if my english was better.

Youltar quoted a frightening "the only way they can ship it [to France] is via DHL and it is like $671.00 for shipping".
*EDIT* There could be other ways but it won't be less than several hundreds bucks. Which IHMO would be more than the unit price itself.

I'm still definitively wanting it, thought. I'll sell my last clothes to fund it.

Sorry for the delay, I have been trying to find a arcade repair company to replace the monitor and some sms games but I have had no luck. Now that Bock is back in action I will be listing the game on ebay in the next week or two.

Actaually, mate. If it was me buying it, I'd tell you to take the monitor out as its the heaviest part...and you can get them virtually anywhere. The cost of a monitor would be $50, the extra cost of shipping with the monitor is at least 3 times that.

Wonder how much to ship it without the monitor? Would probably be below the 20Kg (44 lb) weight limit (just), so it could go through the post.

[Goes and checks USPS website]

Sending by USPS (to Australia) would be US$211(air) or US$77(surface)
Sending by USPS (to Metro France) would be US$155(air) or US$58(by surface)

Go for it, Bock. It would be nice to keep this one "in the family", so to speak. If I had the room, I'd definatly go for it.

Right now I believe Bock will get it for $300 the other interested parties all seem to not be as interested as they were before.

Auction won !

The unit is scheduled to go thru Youltar in US who will take care of it for a bit, possible cleaning/fixing, try to disassemble it for shipping (eg: electronic parts first) and generally decide what's doable or not.

Thanks! I'm off to bed, auction made me wake up at 4:30 AM :-)

Looking at the pictures, I'd say that the monitor is screwed as the yoke looks snapped. So, I would not ship the monitor. Get your mate to take it out before shipping it. A new arcade monitor is easy enough to find for about $100 or less.

May have to replace the chassis also. But thats unlikely.

Nice pick up, by the way. I'd have been all over that, if I had room for another arcade machine.

The cabinet has passed out of my hands and started its journey to france. Good luck, make sure I get some pictures or a video of it once you get it up and running.

Youltar still got the unit. He was busy and it's a complex beast to split into parts for shipping. The screen seems broken so I might have to leave it away and replace it given all specs. Still waiting for weight/cost info from him to evaluate that. Since I'm now leaving the country for about a year we'll hold this for when I come back.

I hope Youltar can post more pictures/infos in the meanwhile :)
