Sounds very much like what Mega Drive Bridge Zone could have been. My only criticism is the "MIDI-ish" quality, perhaps a bit more variation in the drums or less OPL-sounding lead synths would help with that. Or maybe I just prefer square waves to sine.

The lead is basically made of 2x square wave channels and my sawtooth like brass instrument. echo channels are slightly detuned to make things more "alive" and enhance the feel of space (if you have a relatively good HiFi)... for drums, too much action does not fit this tune IMO...

Wow! This version is even better than your last one!
The instruments and echos sound great! Keep up the good work! 9/10 |

I recall this one from your earlier thread, but obviously since then you have distilled it even further, would love to hear conversions of other classic songs through your engine.
Funny thing is I've actually been playing an earlier version of this track on my computer for a while trying to remember who did it lol. Meant to mention, sounds great on my speakers, but for some reason when listening through headphones I notice the snares/cymbal sound a bit horrible and distorted, but I get the same thing with the VGM version leading me to believe it must be in your sound engine rather than the recording. |

that distortion is inevitable, because all music is odne on Z80 and sample playback is 100% software driven... so if I do something else than PCM, there's a gap in PCM stream and this the quality drop...

This a short little motif. Well rendered. Was it reprogrammed from scratch ? It sounds very good. Very 16-bit-ish. Arrange wise, i can't comment, since it was just a short repeating motif. But i would really like to see a full arrange on this sounds. Or perhaps other songs ?

I converted all values that got written into PSG to freq values and then to note values to make that tune... my hearing to note skills aren't too good yet, and this is the only way for me to get totally note accurate stuff if there's no MIDI or module available that is good enough to use as reference. So it did not exactly came from scratch, and there's nothing to do about the shortness, the original is like so and my melody making skills suck a bit so I did not dare to do any work on this really sweet tune of Yuzo Koshiro. I am working on other Sonic1 SMS/GG tunes... for one nice project I'm working on...
Things came from real hardware (my audio modded MD2 ( http://www.hot.ee/tmeeco/MYSMD2.JPG )) all realtime generated waveforms except drums which are samples. |

Someone around here will probably kill me for saying this, but I think the 8-bit Sonic games are terribly overrated, gameplay and music wise. I mean, the ring collecting is just horrible! Even when the rings seem to be at ground level I still miss half of them unless I keep jumping, and I can only manage to hit like one ring with each jump because of the painfully conservative collision detection. And then I get hit and I drop like five rings despite carrying over 90! Bah, humbug! >:(
Anyway, um, this is pretty much a flawless 16-bit upgrade of one of the better songs from the first game so it's hard to fault. Perhaps you could have done more with it, though. Don't be afraid to take some chances! Bonus points for using ogg! :) |
