Somehow the original track is kind of boring to me and this "up-port" leaves me similarly cold. The sound feels like a "typical" Mega Drive game of the era but I think the PCM is either too smooth (22kHz compared to the ~16kHz typically used on Mega Drive games) or just too quiet, it doesn't feel like a Mega Drive Sonic soundtrack. Maybe that's the problem with following the SMS version too closely.

This doesn't use PCM. I used FM drums to give it a more retro feel.

Sounds pretty cool. I would have done it a little harder and dirtier if possible. I agree that the source isn't amazing though.

There's no doubt it follows the source quite accurately, but I must admit it could do with just a little more edge. The overall harmony is good.. just that lead part that doesn't resonate with the rest of the mix as it could.

This is not bad, a nice rendition of the song. Good use of the chips, the sounds are not bad, but i would like to hear the background pad that holds the chords to variate more. They could add so more depth to the song. Think in stuff like AfterBurner, where the background harmony is always variating something, to create a deeper and more interesting song.
And fade-out is kinda of.. anti-climaxing, but since this is a chip, i can understand. Other than that, no complaints here, i really enjoyed it. |

some not the greatest instruments hold it down to make it really enjoyable for me, and use of FM drums was not the greatest decision IMO...

Not sure what to say about this one. I hadn't heard the original song before, and now that I have, I don't really feel like I've been missing out, but it's a decent enough little tune and this is definitely an improvement over the original.

I can understand how people can criticize this: FM instead of PCM, source material not that exiting, doesn't sound like a tune from a Mega Drive Sonic game - but: I don't know, I freaking love it. Especially the use of the PSG channels, which is a necessary requirement for a good Mega Drive tune. Brilliant! 9/9.

Would it be possible to record it via real hardware ? (e.g. Tiido's CCAM'd MD2 or my HD model#1 Genny)
