King Kong for Sega Master System v1.0 (24.03.2009)

How To Play:
============

The character you are controlling is at the bottom left of the screen,
he must move up to the screen, avoiding barrels and girders, activate the
crane using the crane control stick on the left of the roof, and then
finally run to the right of the last platform to jump and grip the moving
hook when it is very near.

When four hooks have been removed, the evil ape falls down,and the princess
is saved, she throws hearts at the brave hero. Score 10000 points to free
her!

How to move:
============

The game is controlled with the Joypad. Press button A for Jump.

The JUMP key will be used to jump over the barels. You can do that only
in the locations where there is enough room to jump. And beware of moving
girders!

Additionaly, you can activate the crane by moving left when the hero
reached the top level.

To jump on the moving hook, simply press the JUMP key.

Scoring:
========

You win 1 point for each barrel that leave the screen. Removing a hook
earns you 10 points. Making the ape falling down gets you a 20 points
bonus.

Tips & Tricks:
==============

Listen to the sound. There are two different kinds of "ticks". One is
very regular, and indicate when the barels move, the other is simply your
own movement. After a while you should be able to play only using sound
to know when pressing the key.

Wait for the hook. Don't jump earlier, wait the right moment. If the ape
throw a barel, just get back and reactivate the crate.

Don't hesitate to get back. It gets complicated with a lots of barels
and girders! Just go back to the first level, jump over, and go again!

This is quite cool. Good job.
The game is really hard though, or maybe I'm just terrible at it :S

The LCD-style gameplay is a bit hard to get used to, a bit old-school harsh in some ways. I still didn't figure out how to jump onto the hook. Maybe a demo video would help?

Jump at the hook when it is at its leftmost position.

For what it wants to be, I think this is really great.

But I have to ask: Why does a hook disappear when I jump at a hook? The first times I correctly jumped at the hook, I was transfered at the start of the level and thought I had done something wrong, and then reloaded my save-state every time ;)

For those of you who choose to live completely devoid of anything Nin***do, the gameplay here is identical to Game & Watch Donkey Kong (maybe harder? I'm finding it terribly frustrating/addictive).

I love the style of the sprites, very comical in comparison to Donkley Kong originals. It does a great job of mimicking the Game&Watch style too.

this is quite difficult to play mainly because of the sloppy gameplay... this brings it all down :/

Very good and addicting. I think Martin summed it right as "for what it wants to be, I think it is really great". There's certainly charm in this kind of presentation. Charm is important because it is often lacking in coders-centric production. And there is nothing missing here.

There's a kind of unfairness in the patterns that eventually you get used to. Sometimes you have to track back to the beginning because the pattern force you to. But it is really cool as is.

There is a small unfortunate design breakage, it always seems like a good idea to run very fast from the beginning when not many objects have spawned. If you do it right, you can get the hook 4 times in a row which way more ease that after you lost a life.

10000 points to save the princess? is that a joke, or a tribute to the infiniteness of old games? :) I could barely reach 100.

Pretty cool Game and Watch port.

I like the funny characters and the Game and Watch like gameplay.

The only problems are that it is a bit hard and some of the preset barrels are at awkward places (like at the bottom-right, the hero gets hit by a barrel about an inch away from him.

Otherwise, good gameplay.

Really nice, it's an old school game which remember me my chilhood.
It's hard but not more than an old Donkey Kong.
