Holidays releases, part two
Post Posted: Sat Jan 14, 2006 5:20 pm
January 14, just in time for the new year! *cough*
Santa Claus had delivery problem, but the second batch of ROM gifts are there.

Side Pocket for the Game Gear, recently acquired and dumped, one of the few left undumped US games spotted by our elite team of cartridge seekers :). Side Pocket is a decent pool/billiard game, featuring two main play modes, and a "Trick Game" mode including a bunch of tricky situation to solve ala puzzle.

Dynamite Headdy for the Game Gear. Already available in its Japanese version, this is the original dump from export cartridges.

And an elusive The Lucky Dime Caper Prototype for the Master System. Unfinished prototype version of the game, featuring a single playable level and no sound. Demonstration shows more levels but they are not playable. Cartridge label says "Donald Duck". A curiosity for Master System fanatics.

Lucky Dime Caper prototype level select patch
Post Posted: Sat Jan 14, 2006 9:37 pm
Add the following to meka.pat:
; Lucky Dime Caper simple level select hack
[crc32:7f6d0df6]
ROM[30] = e5, 21, 38, c0, 34, e1, c9
ROM[67] = 00, f7

During the intro, press Pause to select your level. If you open Meka's RAM viewer you can see the number at RAM offset $c038 change as you press it.

Press Pause 0 times to get the usual first stage "The Northern Woods".
Press Pause 1 time to get "The Great American Forest".
Press Pause 2 times to get "The Andes Mountains".
Press Pause 3 times to get "The Tropical Isles".
Press Pause 4 times to get "The Pyramids".
Press Pause 5 times or more to crash the game (not the emulator).

Press button 1 to start the level.

A more advanced hack is needed. The level section is chosen by the bytes at $c039 and $c03a - for example, set them to 01 01 to get to the first sub-section, which works for The Pyramids to get you into the otherwise closed pyramid. Maybe someone can code a proper hack with a GUI.

Looking at the ROM for Side Pocket, there seems to be a sound test. Perhaps someone could hack it?

And, huh, I guess the SMS version of Dynamite Headdy isn't the only one with an opening cutscene.

Another thing worth noting about the Lucky Dime proto is that there are beavers and exploding mushrooms. Would have been more interesting if they had kept them in...

Quick hack: patch ROM[3704]=02 and "TRICK GAME" will load the sound test. I haven't found the "official" way of getting to that code yet.

Edit:
The menu screen is counting how many times you press button 1 before you press button 2 (memory address $d310), and specifically checks for 10 presses, but the code then throws away the comparison result. It looks like they might have cut off the entry point to the sound test even if the rest of the code is there.

well, I seemed to have fixed the problem so Ultima should work now. If anyone else comes across any corrupt roms, please let me know.

Sorry to bump this old thread, but that'd be awesome! :-)
