Remarkable! Would love to hear the technical details of how this is achieved.

I guess you could put RAM and ROM in the right place and remap port reads and writes, but it still seems like it would be incredibly tough compared to a software process.

There is an Atmel MCU on the board, that is likely doing the IO related work

I wonder how they managed to get the full MSX resolution on screen.

I'm curious what is involved to play msx1 carts, I'd love to add msx1 cart-game support to a sms emulator :)

MSX1 is rather easy to emulate if you have SG-1000 emulation in already, it's basically similar base hardware with different a memory map and port map, a few different features. It's quite more involved more to create an adapter that can do this remapping. Note that later MSX1 games are pushing the hardware more than any SG-1000 game ever did, which may exhibit emulation issues.

Thanks Bock,
I have sg1000 support already, and learned that msx1 reads the joystick through the ay8910's ports - the memory map seems a bit daunting though :/

This is impressive. Would it work on the Master System?

Manual

For reference here's the manual:

It looks like the GG needs to be modified.

I tried using GGMSX
Post Posted: Tue Jul 07, 2015 1:53 pm
I tried to use it to buy because GGMSX that had been previously introduced were produced in small amounts. MSX1 you do not run for only part of the game , compatibility with equipped with game gear the GGLCD 's perfect !

Sorry for the dub English

Does anyone know if these were put up for sale? The link above suggests that there were some bugs so it was never made for sale.

I wish Norix would make his boards for sale or at least open source the design if he's not supporting them anymore. He makes really awesome stuff.

I'd be happy to produce some of his boards or do the necessary PCB design work if anyone wanted to put me in touch with him.

Hello there Bock, this is a nice adapter. I see this uses C-BIOS, and I've converted C-BIOS to the SMS.

The Colors?
Post Posted: Tue Sep 06, 2022 12:13 am
What's getting me intrigued is how it achieves seemingly perfect MSX1 colors, instead of those hideous colors of the SMS mode-2.

The GG 4096 colors palette isn't supposed to available only on GG mode? But the MSX1 games are clearly running on 256x192, so it must be running on the SMS mode.

Apparently, on the GG it's possible to set the mode-2 palette even on the SMS mode? But then is it restricted to 64 colors, or are all the 4096 colors available?

on the GG in smsmode the legacy video mode uses the colors in the palette (which must be initialized) so it's possible to set nicer colors than the ones used by the sms vdp,

Legacy modes on a Game Gear in SMS mode still choose from the 64 color palette. You just get to make much better choices than Sega did.
