My Sega 8-bit room
![]() |
So, I've moved from Kyoto, Japan to Guildford in the UK to pursue a new job, and took the occasion to finally move in with all my collection. Sent stuff over from Japan and got all the stuff from Paris in a big van going under Eurotunnel.
I am still unpacking and setupping the room and taking pictures while its happening. Using cheap IKEA billy with extra shelves and drilling additional holes for maximum efficiency. |

Adding games...
Missing most of the Japanese stuff, SC-3000/SF-7000 stuff and anything I bought after 2008 which is still packed. |

Seeing so much "8bit Sega awesomeness" is really cool.
Bring on that SC-3000/SF-7000 stuff, i'm usually really curious with that software. |

Heh, this is gonna be an interesting topic...

This is so lovely, how many items are there going to be total ? 1000+ ? I got about 200 games for various systems and it won't take much more than one or two sections of the shelves you got.
I need a shelf, single section of what you got but higher, up until ceiling. |

Very cool, Bock. My GameGear stuff is in Ikea shelving too.
Guildford is only an hour drive from me, by the way. Nice town although walking up and down that hill in the town centre can get tiring! |

Awesome.
As someone who struggled to manage a measely 200 carts, I bow to your dedication to the cause. |

damn, you mean there's at least two people in japan with a bigger collection than yours ?
i need to meet these guys :p |

Looks lovely, and good luck with your new job =)

Mate, I'd ask to come round and see it in the flesh (or plastic as it where) but I'd just drool on your carpet ;)
Good luck in the new job! |

Here's a close up of the Korean stuff.
The games are not neatly aligned on shelves yes as I'm only using half of the depth, I'd need to some kind of plastic bit to help line them up. |

Now what you have to do is pass all the games in that room on real hardware, with out using any cheats ^_^
Very nice collection! |

Maybe you can apply to have your room listed as a national heritage :D
![]() ![]() |
|
|
![]() |
Well my hope is to be able to give it a national library/museum at some point, but such structures aren't ready. Apparently there's something in New York that function as a proper library that researchers can get access to (forgot the name). And generally there's a lot of initiative but none are really mature and reliable yet. Things are evolving tho..

Do you have an AI computer?
![]() ![]() |
|
|
![]() |
No, but I have a peripheral for it called "Sound Board". It is still very difficult to get any sensible information on the SEGA AI.. |

Don't get me wrong, I only asked you because of the sign/sticker in last photo, over the Korean stuff... Maybe I mistake it... It would be nice to add more photos of your amazing collection if there's any change since last photo... |

Yes I will post more photos later. I am still working on "merging" my Japanese and France collection (compare items for minor variations and select each part in best condition) and this is taking a while.

Here's some of the SG-1000/SC-3000 stuff !
Still messy and unaligned, bad lighting condition (there's shelves obstructing natural light) but very sexy!. |

*jaw dropping*
Oh god... There's some really dedicated people here. Nay, make that really, really dedicated. I'm no collector at heart (though I do hunt for gems), but if I ever had the opportunity to see this for real, I would. By the way, are there some games among these that you didn't play yet? |

I bet it feels good to finally get everything together and out on display! |

Huzzah! Its nice to see the collection on display. And once again cheap Ikea furniture saves the day!

Starting to unpack the console packaging.
I'm not sure in which way to dispose them. Ideally I would like to show more artworks (they are all different packaging) but I'm lacking space. I'll first go and try to have the other consoles out then have to play a little game of Tetris arranging boxes in a nice configuration (some are fragile and can't support others, etc.) |

More sorting unpacking, I'm almost done! maybe a week more or work.
Too many spare peripheral i should start trading out. |

Amazing stuff. I'd love to check it out for real some time. I'd even pay an entrance fee to visit your SMS museum. :-D

You could run a guided tour of it, trouble is you'd have to provide lunch too - due to the length of time it would take to get through it all :) |

Guys you are welcome anytime! But the room is still quite messy (you can't see the messy side from the pictures, there's a giant clothes storage furniture thing I need to get rid of). Also I need to get some consoles connected to screens to play! :)

Master System and Game Gear stuff

Mostly done with the Game Gear stuff.
Also I've been able to get rid of the enormous furniture in the middle of the room so I could take a wider shot of the SG-1000/SMS stuff. Next thing I will install a gaming table with various systems connected and need to buy sitting stools. |

What you do for a living, and was it the same thing in Japan?
The room looks nice, I would probably have a bigger amount of stuff, but I like both comic books and videogames. |

I make video games for a living. If your underlying question is "how much do your earn?" I'm not particularly rich. I purchased a lot on the cheap in early 2000's when games were cheaper, and also received lots of donated games in those days (when Meka was popular). The rest has to do with focus, obsessive-compulsive disorder and private sacrifice. Traveling also helped.
If I look on eBay today retro games became really expensive. Collecting is a rather unhealthy activity in the first place, I'm glad I started when things where easier to get. |

I can't find the words to express my joy, that is an insane collection you have there!
I'd be more grateful than I can say if you could spare a set of those 3D glasses. |

Sorry unfortunately i already put a set of 3-D Glasses with games on eBay two weeks ago, it didn't went very high. I still have things to spare but no spare 3-D Glasses (I got my other spare dedicated so I'm keeping it now). |

No problem. :) I didn't spot your listing, did you offer worldwide shipping and how much did it end up going for if you don't mind me asking? I just saw a few of them in your photo and assumed this is what you meant when you said you were considering parting some stuff out. I would have offered you triple digits by the way, would that have been enough? I actually settled for a temporary solution, which only set me back around $20, which was to purchase some ASUS 3D Glasses. I'm running a Japanese Master System so these are plug and play, they have the same 3.5mm jack and work in the same way as the SEGA glasses. |

I've been able to classify and sort a lot of stuff this year, however I am likely to be moving again (trying to get myself closer to London).
So I started packing again.. Packing is useful however since it helps me going through the less classified part of my collection to classify my listing, sometimes identify releases or variations and perform a few dumps from the waiting list. |

Wow. That collection is nutso! Why so many SMS's? Are you collecting as an investment?
![]() ![]() |
|
|
![]() |
The SMS are different models/variations.
I am collecting with the intent of having everything in a public library/museum when those are settled and good enough (e.g.: stable, backed nationally and serving general interest). I am not collecting as an investment, it would be a foolish plan and I believe that the price of retro games goods will become much lower in the next 1-2 decade as more people will lose interest. |
